About Gravity Garden Studio

The creative process we implement in all of our work involves the expression of creative sensibilities unique to the Gravity Garden aesthetic, as well as the utilization of technical skills and knowhow developed from collective decades of having our hands on the tools and materials themselves.

We have the ability to handle most, if not all, phases of the process in house. We aim to produce work that has a marriage between all elements of form, material, and concept in a pursuit of deeper and more tangible levels of beauty.

Through the rooting of ourselves and our passions in the process itself, we manifest works of art that root the viewers and participants in the same passion and human essence that becomes more and more difficult to feel in the superficialities of modern hyper-consumerist society.

Homage is paid to the traditions of craft and the conversations of art history all the while taking the old into the realm of the contemporary with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches.

We create in an expansive space of freedom and expression, constantly called to push the boundaries of our own will and imagination.

About The Founder

Dave Custodio is a multimedia installation artist and founder of Gravity Garden Studio.

The focus of his work is to emphasize a balanced and impactful energy of form through craft, structural design, and the clever use of material. He works primarily with wood, clay, and bamboo but is known to incorporate a variety of materials and mediums into his work ranging from led lights, fabrics, plantlife, upcycled objects, and metal.

Inspired by the Wabi-Sabi and naturally occurring forms and patterns, he is drawn to objects and architecture of times and of cultures that most strongly reflect a humanity existing in alignment with the natural world.

Physical space is often his canvas, and so his work often functions architecturally or becomes architectural detail.  He curates environments that evoke a sense of rootedness and that facilitate dynamic human connection within the sculpted space itself.

Dave’s work ranges from large scale installations to small or medium scale art objects. He has shown work in galleries, taken commissions for private clientele, and has produced large scale works for major global events and festivals.

He studies structural principles and the traditions of craft to inform his technical foundation while also pushing his boundaries into an innovative contemporary space.  The work that he creates draws attention to the beauty of the material that he is using, taking the humble approach of merely reacting to what nature has already provided for us.

Dave holds a bachelors of fine arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design where he graduated with academic honors. While he spent a significant portion of his adult life living, practicing, and showing his work locally in Boston, he is currently based in the mountains of Western North Carolina. His Appalachian ranch and art studio is where he is able to effectively utilize the abundance of natural material the land provides, and to continue pushing to meet his creative potential in new and exciting ways.
