About Gravity Garden Studio

Gravity Garden Studio is an art and design operation based on the creative practice of the founder and creative director Dave Custodio. We are one part design studio with high aesthetic pursuits, and one part project management powerhouse with full logistic, fabrication, and installation capabilites.

The creative process we implement in all of our work involves the expression of creative sensibilities unique to the Gravity Garden aesthetic. We aim to produce work that has a marriage between all elements of form, material, and concept in a pursuit of a deeper and more tangible level of beauty.

We have the ability to handle most, if not all, phases of the process in house, and utilize a technical skillset developed from collective decades of having our hands on the tools and materials themselves. Together we are a collective of artists who consolodate effort under a single brand and direction to scale our potential and to create work of a greater degree of impact.

As artists we pay homage to the traditions of craft and the conversations of art history all the while taking the old into the realm of the new with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. We root of ourselves and our passions in the process hoping to connect to the viewers and participants on a more human level. We seek to inspire and be inspired, and to contribute meaningfully to our world and surroundings.

About The Founder

Dave Custodio is a multimedia installation artist and founder of Gravity Garden Studio.

His work strives towards a balanced and impactful energy of form through craft, structural design, and the clever use of material. He works primarily with wood, clay, and bamboo but is known to incorporate a variety of materials and mediums into his work ranging from led lights, fabrics, plantlife, upcycled objects, and metal.

Inspired by the Wabi-Sabi and naturally occurring forms and patterns, he is drawn to objects and architecture of times and of cultures that most strongly reflect a humanity existing in alignment with the natural world.

Physical space is typically his canvas, and so his work often functions architecturally or becomes architectural detail.  He curates environments that evoke a sense of rootedness and that facilitate dynamic human connection within the sculpted space itself.

He studies structural principles and the traditions of craft to inform his technical foundation while also pushing design elements into an innovative and contemporary space.  His work seeks opportunities to showcase both the beauty of the material that he is using and the evidence of the craft process itself.

Dave’s work ranges from large scale installations to small or medium scale art objects. He has shown work in galleries, taken commissions for private clientele, and has produced large scale works for major global events and festivals.

Dave holds a bachelors of fine arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design where he graduated with academic honors. While he spent a significant portion of his adult life living, practicing, and showing his work locally in Boston, he is currently based in the mountains of Western North Carolina. His Appalachian ranch and art studio allows him to utilize the abundance of natural material the land provides. In this way he continues to strive towards his creative potential in new and exciting ways.
